Burns Becomes Fifth HS Indoor Sub-Four Miler At BU Last Chance Meet

Connor Burns went under four minutes again, this time doing it on an indoor oval at the Boston University Last Chance Indoor Qualifier. 

Burns, a senior a Southern Boone MO, ran 3:59.11 for 30th place in a meet filled with sub-four performers – including seven from the University of Washington. 

Burns became the third prep runner to do it in successive years and the fifth ever indoors, joining Alan Webb (2001), Drew Hunter (2016), Hobbs Kessler (2021) and Colin Sahlman (2022). Burns' 1,500 en route split of 3:42.21 is No. 2 all-time behind Hunter. 

Another high school runner, Devan Kipyego from St Raphael RI, ran a US#2 time of 4:01.04 to move to No. 8 on the all-time list. 

Rocky Hansen from Christ School NC, who came into the weekend with the country's top time of 4:01.11, is No. 9 all-time. 

Also in Boston, Collin Boler of Delbarton NJ ran the second-fastest mile in New Jersey high school history with a time of 4:04.05. 

In the women's 3,000 meters, high schooler Ellie Shea of Emerging Elite got very close to Katelyn Tuohy's national high school record when she took third overall in 9:02.02. Tuohy's record is 9:01.81 from 2019. Alexa Efraimson ran 9:00.16 on an oversized track in 2014.
